Turbulence generation by large-scale extreme vertical drafts and the modulation of local energy dissipation in stably stratified geophysical flows

چکیده
Stratified flows can develop powerful vertical drafts - resulting from a resonant interaction of gravity waves and turbulent motions when the system explores certain region parameter space which is geophysical interest. These extreme (detected through kurtosis velocity, ${K}_{w}$) do generate turbulence, leading to enhanced local-in-time-and-space kinetic (${\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\epsilon}}}_{V}$) potential energy dissipation. They are needed in order for stratified be as efficient homogenous isotropic flow dissipating energy.

A quasi-normal scale elimination model of turbulence and its application to stably stratified flows
Models of planetary, atmospheric and oceanic circulation involve eddy viscosity and eddy diffusivity, KM and KH , that account for unresolved turbulent mixing and diffusion. The most sophisticated turbulent closure models used today for geophysical applications belong in the family of the Reynolds stress models. These models are formulated for the physical space variables; they consider a hiera...
متن کاملGeneration and saturation of large scale flows in flute turbulence
The excitation and suppression of large–scale anisotropic modes during the temporal evolution of a magnetic–curvature–driven electrostatic flute instability is numerically investigated. The formation of streamer-like structures is attributed to the linear development of the instability while the subsequent excitation of the zonal modes is the result of the non–linear coupling between linearly g...
متن کامل2DV Nonlinear k-ε Turbulence Modeling of Stratified Flows
The commonly used linear k-ε turbulence model is shown to be incapable of accurate prediction of turbulent flows, where non-isotropy is dominant. Two examples of non-isotropic flows, which have a wide range of applications in marine waters, are saline water flow and the stratified flows due to temperature gradients. These relate to stratification and consequently, variation of density through...
متن کاملTemperature front formation in stably stratified turbulence
Temperature fronts and associated cliff-ramp structures in stably stratified turbulence are investigated using DNS of the Navier-Stokes equations under the Bousinesq approximation. Vertical profiles of temperature fluctuations show sawtooth wave structures which result in a skewed PDF of the derivative of temperature fluctuation in the z-direction. The mechanisms for generating and maintaining ...
متن کاملLarge-Eddy Simulation of Stably Stratified Atmospheric Boundary Layer Turbulence: A Scale-Dependent Dynamic Modeling Approach
A new tuning-free subgrid-scale model, termed locally averaged scale-dependent dynamic (LASDD) model, is developed and implemented in large-eddy simulations (LES) of stable boundary layers. The new model dynamically computes the Smagorinsky coefficient and the subgrid-scale Prandtl number based on the local dynamics of the resolved velocity and temperature fields. Overall, the agreement between...
